Local betting landscape

Great Britain has the most developed licensed online market in the world: any operator that meets the Gambling Commission's conditions can be licensed, every licensee is on a public register, and affiliates may advertise within the CAP Code.

Online betting in Great Britain is regulated under the Gambling Act 2005. Since 2014 any operator taking bets from customers in Britain must hold a remote licence from the Gambling Commission regardless of where it is based; the Commission publishes a register of every licensee with an account number, which is what this site checks each bookmaker against.

Everything, with a licence: sports betting, exchanges, casino, poker, bingo and lotteries. The National Lottery is run under a separate licence by Allwyn. Northern Ireland has its own, older law and the Commission’s remit covers Great Britain only.

Rules that matter to players

The minimum age is 18 for all gambling including the National Lottery. Winnings are not taxed. Credit cards cannot be used to gamble. Licensed operators must offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion, and must be connected to GamStop. Stake limits on online slots (£5 per spin, £2 for under-25s) came in during 2024 and 2025 under the white paper reforms, and a statutory levy on operators funds research and treatment from 2025.

Advertising and affiliates

Gambling advertising is legal and governed by the CAP and BCAP Codes and the Commission’s licence conditions: no appeal to under-18s, no suggestion that gambling solves problems, significant terms with every offer, and no marketing to self-excluded people. Affiliate sites are treated as the operator’s marketing and are held to the same rules, which is why every page here carries 18+ and a safer-gambling signpost.

Tax

Players pay nothing. Operators pay remote gaming duty on casino revenue and general betting duty on sports betting, with a proposed harmonised rate under consultation in 2025 and 2026.
