Betting abroad: using your UK account overseas
Whether your UK bookmaker account works on holiday, why apps geo-block, what local law says about the bet, and why a VPN is a bad idea.
A UK licence authorises the operator to take bets from customers in Great Britain. Whether it will take yours from a hotel in Spain depends on whether it is also licensed there.
What happens in practice
Large operators hold licences in several countries and route you to the local product (Ireland, Spain, Italy, Denmark and others). Elsewhere, the app detects your location and blocks betting, though you can usually log in and withdraw. Some countries block gambling sites at network level.
Local law
The bet is governed by the law of the country you are in, not by UK law. In a monopoly country like Norway it is the operator that breaks the law, not you; in Singapore or Japan the player commits an offence too. Winnings may be taxable locally. Our country pages say which applies where.
VPNs
Using a VPN to appear to be in Britain breaches the operator’s terms and gives it grounds to void bets and confiscate winnings, which several have done. It can also put you on the wrong side of local law.
Practical advice
Check the country page before you travel, place bets before you leave if the market allows, and keep your account funded from a UK bank rather than trying to deposit from abroad.
