Local betting landscape
Since the Supreme Court struck down the federal sports betting ban in 2018, each state decides for itself. Most now license online sports betting; only a few license online casino. Winnings are taxed and the minimum age is usually 21.

Federal law does not license gambling; it leaves it to the states and punishes interstate transmission of bets (the Wire Act) and payments to unlawful gambling (UIGEA). Since Murphy v NCAA in May 2018, states have been free to legalise sports betting, and most have.
Sports betting
Around 38 states and Washington DC allow sports betting, most of them online, each with its own regulator, licences and tax rate. A few (California, Texas, Georgia among them) still do not. Operators must be licensed in each state and geolocate customers.
Online casino
Far fewer: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island license online casino. Elsewhere it is unlawful, and “sweepstakes casinos” operating under promotional-contest law face growing state action.
Rules that matter to players
Minimum age is 21 in most states. All gambling winnings are taxable income federally; operators issue tax forms above thresholds and withhold on large wins.
Advertising and affiliates
Legal and large. Several states license affiliates directly (for example New Jersey and Pennsylvania) and require registration. Advertising rules vary by state and are tightening.
