Local betting landscape

Canada regulates gambling province by province. Ontario opened a licensed private market in April 2022 and Alberta followed in July 2026; every other province runs online gambling through its lottery corporation. Affiliates may operate in the open markets under strict no-inducement advertising rules.

The Criminal Code leaves the conduct and management of gambling to the provinces. Two have opened licensed markets to private operators; the rest offer online gambling only through their own lottery corporations.

Ontario and Alberta

Ontario’s market, regulated by the AGCO with iGaming Ontario as conduct-and-manage entity, launched on 4 April 2022 and has dozens of licensed operators. Alberta’s market under the AGLC opened on 13 July 2026. Both publish registries of licensed operators. The operator directory above links to sources for the profiles covered by this guide.

Elsewhere

British Columbia, Quebec, the Atlantic provinces and the Prairies offer online betting and casino through provincial sites (PlayNow, Mise-o-jeu, ALC, PlayAlberta’s predecessor and so on). Offshore sites serving those provinces are unlicensed there.

Advertising and affiliates

Both open markets permit affiliate marketing but ban public advertising of inducements: no offers, free bets or sign-up rewards may be advertised to the public. Our Canadian coverage on TheBetSeeker explains these local requirements.

Tax

Recreational winnings are not taxed. Professional gambling income can be.
