Local betting landscape
Australia licenses online sports and racing betting through state and territory regulators, mostly the Northern Territory, but the Interactive Gambling Act prohibits online casino, online poker and in-play betting placed online. Advertising is legal but increasingly restricted.

The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 is the federal law. It prohibits providing online casino games, online poker and online in-play sports betting to people in Australia, and since 2017 it has been enforced against offshore operators by ACMA, which blocks sites and pursues their executives. Online pre-match sports betting and racing betting are lawful when licensed by a state or territory; most corporate bookmakers hold Northern Territory licences.
What is legal
Online betting on sports and racing before the event starts. In-play bets must be placed by telephone. Lotteries and keno are licensed by state. Online casino and poker are prohibited.
Rules that matter to players
Minimum age 18. Winnings are not taxed. Credit cards were banned for online betting in 2024. BetStop, a national self-exclusion register, launched in 2023.
Advertising and affiliates
Affiliate marketing is lawful for licensed betting products. Advertising during live sport broadcasts is restricted, inducements to open an account cannot be advertised in several states, and a national ban on online gambling advertising has been debated since a 2023 parliamentary inquiry recommended it.
Tax
Operators pay state point-of-consumption taxes of 10 to 20 per cent on net revenue.
